Stephen Ministry

What is the Stephen Ministry?

This ministry of service is so named for the Lord's faithful servant Stephen (see Acts 6).

Stephen Ministers are trained in the art of listening, sensing others' feelings, compassionate assertiveness, maintaining confidentiality, crisis theory and intervention, effective telephone care, praying with people, and finding help in the Bible.

Stephen Ministers receive a minimum of 50 hours of training over a 6 month period, and twice monthly training thereafter for the duration of their commission, which is usually 2 years. Stephen Ministers meet regularly to support each other, and share experiences (confidentiality of the care receiver is maintained) to build up the Stephen Ministry.

Most importantly, a Stephen Minister is someone with a heart for the welfare of God's children, and who is called by God to serve as a lay minister to the congregation.
