THEN JESUS CAME TO THEM AND SAID, "ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH HAS BEEN GIVEN TO ME. THEREFORE GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND TEACHING THEM TO OBEY EVERYTHING I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. AND SURELY I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE VERY END OF THE AGE." (Matthew 28:18-20)
Career Missionaries
The Kelly
Family have been Covenant Missionaries to Mexico since
1985. Their home church is in Albany Park, IL. The first step toward Covenant
work in Mexico was taken in 1946 when missionaries were called to work
among migrant farm workers in southern Texas. Later the work spread across
the border into Reynosa and 1,000 miles south to the state of Oaxaca. The
number of churches in these two areas has grown to fifty, of which seventeen
are in the Reynosa / Monterrey area and thirty three are in the Oaxaca
area.
A missionary effort was opened in a major suburb of Mexico City in 1974. Strong emphasis has been placed on home Bible studies and discipleship training. The eleven churches in the Mexico City area are led by Mexican lay people who have been trained to do the work of the ministry. This has spontaneously spilled over into the state of Morelos in the cities of Cuautla and Cuernavaca. Since 1988 two new ministries have been opened in Puebla and northern Mexico.
The need for trained leaders for our work is met in two main ways. A Bible Institute for pastors is conducted in Reynosa. Theological Education by Extension (T.E.E.) classes are conducted in several centers in Oaxaca and Mexico City. Subjects taught include courses in pastoral theology, preaching, counseling, and doctrine.
The
Restrepo
Family, have been Covenant Missionaries to Spain since 1996.
Their home church is in Oakland, CA. Much history
has past since the apostle Paul expressed his plan to take the gospel to
Spain (Romans
15:28). During the Middle Ages, Spain was under Muslim rule, during
which tim Jews, Muslims and Christians lived together in peace.
In 1492 Isabel and Fernand, the Catholic Monarchs, backed Christopher Columbus's expedition to the Indies, which led to the discovery of America. That year they also expelled Jews and later the Muslims. They instituted the Inquisition to safeguard the purity of the faith. In the 1930s Spain suffered through a devastating civil war followed by forty years of a fascist dictator who oppressed the evangelical church. Finally in 1978 religious freedom was granted and in 1992 evangelicals were given full equality.
The Federation of Free Evangelical Churches of Spain (FIEIDE) began in 1957 and is committed to church planting. The FIEIDE is one of our sister churches within the International Federation of Free Evangelical Churches with whom we now have an agreement and have sent missionaries to assist in evangelism, church planting, and discipleship.
We have partnered with The Smith Family for missions work in Equatorial Guinea in western Africa.
We are happy to be the sending church for the The Peterson Family. They were consecrated April 3, 2005 for work in Costa Rica with International Teams. Stay tuned for more info about the Peterson's ministry!
